Travel rewards credit cards have saved my life.

Well, not literally, but they certainly have saved me tens of thousands of dollars in travel expenses over the years, and they’ve allowed me to take advantage of incredible perks that I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to afford! The bottom line is that if you travel more than once a year, then getting a travel rewards credit card is a no-brainer (as long as you pay off your balance each month.) The points you can acquire by using one of these cards will allow you to save money while enjoying the luxury life, such as business class tickets, free hotel stays, access to airport lounges, and more.

In this article, I am going to give you my personal recommendations (in order, with #1 being my favorite) for the best travel rewards credit cards on the market. I actually carry all these cards in my wallet and use them almost every single day! For each credit card, I will be sharing a breakdown of its benefits and key points, and I will d o my best to keep this blog post updated as time goes on.

Please keep in mind that these credit cards are only offered in the USA for American citizens/residents, so if you are unable to get approved for an American credit card then kindly look into my other travel tips in my travel hacking course.

Let’s get into it!

Why I Recommend

I love the Chase Sapphire Preferred® card! I've had great experiences with it, and I've saved thousands of dollars by using the perks it offers. The sign-up bonus is a great way to get started with rewards points, and the extra points you'll earn on travel make this a great card for anyone who loves to get out and explore the world! Plus, no foreign transaction fees which can often be 3% on other cards when using your card internationally.

In my opinion, the card earns you so much value that it's well worth the annual fee of $95.

When you use your Chase Sapphire Preferred® points to book travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards, they are worth 25% more than face value & it's easy to book! You can also transfer your points to one of Chase’s 13 airline/hotel partners!

Why I Recommend

While this card may not be for everyone, it's really great for frequent travelers and those who are looking for specific perks!

If you're looking for exclusive lounge access, or want to earn hotel elite status or fly first class, then this card will be a fantastic choice for you. If you're a frequent traveler who likes luxurious perks and will utilize the full range of features, I would say it's definitely worth the high annual fee!

This card comes with many benefits, including reimbursements for your Clear, Global Entry, and TSA PreCheck application fees; a digital entertainment credit of up to $240/year for eligible purchases with Disney+, The Disney Bundle, ESPN+, Hulu, Peacock, SiriusXM, Audible and/or The New York Times; up to $200/year in airline fee credit with a pre-selected airline; and more!
Pros & Cons
Extra Details

Pros

  • The welcome bonus you can earn with this card is a great way to kick-start your travel rewards journey.
  • This card comes with many benefits, including reimbursements for your Clear, Global Entry, and TSA PreCheck application fees; a digital entertainment credit of up to $240/year for eligible purchases with Disney+, The Disney Bundle, ESPN+, Hulu, Peacock, SiriusXM, Audible and/or The New York Times;  up to $200/year in airline fee credit with a pre-selected airline; and more!
  • This card also comes with 24/7 Platinum Club Concierge service that can help you book travel arrangements, find tickets to events, or find a special gift!

Cons

  • The $695 annual fee is admittedly steep, and I have found the price is only worth it if you can take full advantage of the included benefits. Those who don't travel often may not get to enjoy enough of the benefits to justify the annual cost.
  • This card will only earn you bonus rewards on specific airfare and hotel purchases (outside of the welcome bonus), so it's not as good as some cards are at helping you earn points on other spending categories.
  • Taking full advantage of some of the benefits of the American Express Platinum Card can be complicated, unlike some of the broader travel credits offered by the competing premium cards.
  • Earn 100,000 Membership Rewards® Points after you spend $6,000 on purchases on the Card in your first 6 months of Card Membership.
  • Earn 5X the Membership Rewards Points for flights booked with American Express Travel or directly with airlines (up to $500,000 per calendar year.)
  • Earn 5X Membership Rewards Points when you book a prepaid hotel through American Express Travel.
  • Earn $200 back in statement credits each year when you book prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts® or The Hotel Collection through American Express Travel and pay with your Platinum Card®.
  • Eligible purchases with Disney+, The Disney Bundle, ESPN+, Hulu, Peacock, SiriusXM, Audible and/or The New York Times can earn you a digital entertainment credit of up to $240/year. Enrollment required.
  • Access to the newly expanded Centurion® Network, including 40+ Centurion Lounge and Studio locations worldwide.
  • Earn up to $200/year in airline fee statement credits with a pre-selected, qualifying airline.
  • Take advantage of Uber VIP status, as well as $15 a month in Uber Cash to use on rides or Uber Eats orders in the US (up to $200 savings annually.)

Pros

  • The $695 annual fee is only worth it if you’re taking full advantage of the card’s benefits. Seldom travelers may not get enough value to warrant the cost
  • Outside of the current welcome bonus, you’re only earning bonus rewards on specific airfare and hotel purchases, so it’s not a great card for other spending categories
  • The annual airline fee credit and other statement credits can be complicated to take advantage of compared to the broader travel credits offered by competing premium cards.

Cons

  • The card comes with a $95 annual fee
  • Earn 100,000 Membership Rewards® Points after you spend $6,000 on purchases on the Card in your first 6 months of Card Membership.
  • Earn 5X the Membership Rewards Points for flights booked with American Express Travel or directly with airlines (up to $500,000 per calendar year.)
  • Earn 5X Membership Rewards Points when you book a prepaid hotel through American Express Travel.

Why I Recommend

This card is great for beginners! The annual fees are relatively low, and there are plenty of bonus spending categories to help you earn points faster. You’ll earn triple points on many everyday purchases like restaurants, supermarkets, and gas stations, as well as on air travel and hotels.

In addition, every year you can enjoy $100 in savings on a single hotel booking of $500 or more through thankyou.com (excluding taxes and fees). This benefit alone will offset the annual cost of the card!
